Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple’s CEO

CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, has stepped down, with Apple COO Tim Cook being his replacement, following a recommendation from Jobs’ himself. Steve will remain with the company as Chairman of the Board.

The following letter was published by Steve:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Goodbye Steve. Through your rule as head of Apple, personal computing, music, and smartphones have changed forever. Although we knew this day would inevitably come, we will still miss you and your iconic black turtleneck.

White MacBook Discontinued, Kind of…

x10sctmp

Apple is phasing out the white MacBook for consumers, removing the system from the product line on the Mac page. The white MacBook has seen a good past and at $999, the only other portable system that matches its price is the entry-level MacBook Air, which sacrifices display size, storage, connectivity, and optical drive for portability and aesthetics.

The white MacBook is still available to educational institutions via resellers though, according to a statement by Apple.

“MacBook (MC516) is now Available for Education Institutions Only. All backlog for channel and non direct education institution customers should be cancelled effective today July 20th.

The MacBook (MC516) will be available to all channel partners via the Apple On-line Reseller stores and is now intended to be sold out only to education institutions.”

The low price and durable plastic of the MacBook has always made it popular among schools and it makes sense for Apple to continue selling them to these consumers. For the rest of us, it’s time to say a final farewell.

Apple has updated their 27-inch monitor to support Thunderbolt. As you recall, Thunderbolt is the new interface that’s been rolling out to their line of computers. The technology can support 10Gbps of throughput in each direction and is capable of daisy-chaining, meaning you can have peripherals plugged into your monitor, all while the monitor is plugged into your computer with one Thunderbolt cable.

In addition, the new monitor has a FaceTime HD camera. You can grab yours now for the same price of $1,000. [via Apple]
