CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, has stepped down, with Apple COO Tim Cook being his replacement, following a recommendation from Jobs’ himself. Steve will remain with the company as Chairman of the Board.

The following letter was published by Steve:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Goodbye Steve. Through your rule as head of Apple, personal computing, music, and smartphones have changed forever. Although we knew this day would inevitably come, we will still miss you and your iconic black turtleneck.

The New York Times recently unveiled their paywall for online content. Visitors to NYTimes.com in the U.S. who read more than 20 articles per month will now be asked to pay.  The new plan offers a monthly subscription of $15 with a smartphone app, $20 with a tablet app, or $35 for complete digital access. Subscribers with a physical subscription will be given full digital access. In addition, readers who access Times articles from sites like Facebook and Twitter won’t face the same paywall. Readers are also given five free visits per day from search engines like Google.

Since the plan rolled out back on March 28th, Experian Hitwise has reported a decrease in traffic to the New York Times website. They monitored site traffic 12 days before and after the paywall went live and according to their data, for most days, traffic to the site decreased between 5 and 15 percent. April 9th was the only day where site traffic increased and Hitwise states that this was most likely due to the interest in the budget discussions in Congress and the potential government shutdown.

The New York Times has kept quiet about site traffic and company chairman, Arthur Sulzberger, stated that it’s too early to report those stats.

In this era, where most people get their news online for free, it is big news to see a company like the Times to shift to a paid model. [via New York Times]

march 11 roundup

March was quite a busy month for JellyWoo. Here’s some of the topics we didn’t have time to cover in-depth:

  • NVIDIA recently launched Tegra Zone, an Android application that highlights apps that benefit from the dual-core Tegra 2 chip found in the latest Android smartphones and tablets. The developers of the featured apps have gone the extra step and taken full advantage of the dual-core processor, offering apps that have more detail, better resolution, and heavier computation loads. • T-Mobile broke the news earlier this month, stating that Danger would be decommissioning its cloud services after May 31st. Those consumers with Sidekicks can rest assured though according to T-Mobile. They will “provide offers…to help make an easy transition.” T-Mobile will also be providing Sidekick apps and web-based tools that will help get your data off your Sidekick device.
  • Apple confirmed that it would be refunding customers who bought the original iPad after February 16th. Those in the U.S. will get $100 refunded back, while those overseas will get £100 / €100 back. If you are eligible, you need to go to an Apple store with your receipt and get the refund processed. If you ordered your iPad online, you’ll need to call Apple.
  • Microsoft announced that they have sold their 10 millionth Kinect, making it the world’s fastest selling consumer electronics device according to Guinness. In addition, 10 million Kinect games have been sold. [via Guinness]

Apple iPad 2

Steve Jobs made a surprise appearance at the Apple event on Wednesday, revealing the successor to the hugely successful iPad, the iPad 2. The CEO of Apple went on a medical leave earlier in the year, but looked quite healthy when he appeared on stage.

The new iPad brings in a total redesign, managing to loose a third of its weight and bringing its thickness down to 8.8 mm and weight to just 1.3 pounds. The new tablet is also faster, thanks to the new dual-core Apple A5 processor, which offers up to 2 times faster CPU performance and up to 9 times faster graphics performance, while still retaining the same low power of the A4. Other features include rear and front facing cameras, built-in gyroscope, 10 hours of battery life, black and white color options, the same 9.7-inch LED-backlit  LCD screen, and models that support both the Verizon or AT&T network.

Along with new hardware, the iPad 2 will also be running an updated version of iOS, version 4.3. The update brings faster Safari performance, AirPlay improvements, preference for iPad switch (mute or rotation lock), PhotoBooth, FaceTime, personal hotspot (iPhone 4 only), and iTunes home sharing, which lets you access your music, movies, and TV shows on your computer directly from your device.

Other applications that will be available for download include iMovie, which adds a precision editor, multitrack audio recording, new themes, and AirPlay support and GarageBand, which offers touch instruments (piano, organ, guitars, drums, and bass), guitar amps/effects, 8 track recording and mixing, over 250 loops, and compatibility with the Mac version. Both apps will cost $4.99 each.

Apple was also excited to announce a few new accessories for the iPad. The first is a cable that brings HDMI video out to the device. It offers HDMI mirrored video output at 1080p HD, rotation support, and compatibility with all apps. That will be available for $39. Another upcoming accessory is the Smart Cover. Used in replacement of current wrap-around cases, the new covers magnetically attach to your iPad and can be bended to act as a stand or used to just protect the screen. It also wakes up your tablet on open and puts it to sleep on close. The cases will run you from $39 to $69, depending on if you choose polyurethane or leather.

With the same $499 starting price as the original iPad and a launch date of March 11th, 2011 might really be the year for the iPad 2. [via Apple]
