CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, has stepped down, with Apple COO Tim Cook being his replacement, following a recommendation from Jobs’ himself. Steve will remain with the company as Chairman of the Board.

The following letter was published by Steve:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Goodbye Steve. Through your rule as head of Apple, personal computing, music, and smartphones have changed forever. Although we knew this day would inevitably come, we will still miss you and your iconic black turtleneck.

Electronic Arts recently bought PopCap Games, the company known for Bejeweled and Plants Vs. Zombies for $750 million. PopCap currently has 150 million games installed and played worldwide, on everything from Google and Facebook to the iPhone and Android. Already, games like Bejeweled 3, Plants vs. Zombies, Peggle, Zuma, and Bookworm are ready to be ported into consoles later this year.

Some people ask, what about Blizzard? PopCap has made certain games, like Bejeweled available in World of Warcraft and Starcraft II, but they state that they never really had a partnership with Blizzard and it was more just game developers being game developers. [via Kotaku]

The latest version takes advantage of a serious security flaw in Safari and supports iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and iPad 2 devices running firmware versions up to iOS 4.3.3. Already, there have been over a million jailbreaks, according to a twitter post by @chpwn, and user feedback has been very positive.

All users have to do to jailbreak is head to JailbreakMe on their iOS device and click “Install.” The whole process takes less than five minutes and is one of the easiest jailbreak methods out there. [via JailbreakMe]

Cell Phones Deemed a Possible Cancer Risk

x10sctmp0

The debate on whether cellphones do cause cancer has taken a turn. The World Health Organization has classified cell phones as potential links to brain cancer. The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, a global authority on medicine and the group who conducted the study, found that regular cell phone usage (30 minutes of talk-time per day) was a possible cause of glioma, a malignant form of brain cancer.

Cell phone usage is now classified as a Class 2B carcinogen. This is the IARC’s definition of a 2B classification:

“This category is used for agents for which there is limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans and less than sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. It may also be used when there is inadequate evidence of carcinogenicity in humans but there is sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. In some instances, an agent for which there is inadequate evidence of carcinogenicity in humans and less than sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals together with supporting evidence from mechanistic and other relevant data may be placed in this group. An agent may be classified in this category solely on the basis of strong evidence from mechanistic and other relevant data.”

So although the risk is not definitive, cell phone usage is now classified on the same threat level as DDT, lead, and hundreds of other possible carcinogens. [via The Telegraph]

After ten months of delays, Apple is finally releasing the elusive white iPhone 4 to the world. The phone will be available for both AT&T and Verizon and no changes have been made from the black iPhone 4 besides a small tweak with the proximity sensor. The pricing will remain the same, with the 16GB model costing $199 on contract and the 32GB model for $299.

The white iPhone 4 is available now, but don’t complain when everyone else on the block has an iPhone 5 around the holidays. [via Apple]
