CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, has stepped down, with Apple COO Tim Cook being his replacement, following a recommendation from Jobs’ himself. Steve will remain with the company as Chairman of the Board.

The following letter was published by Steve:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Goodbye Steve. Through your rule as head of Apple, personal computing, music, and smartphones have changed forever. Although we knew this day would inevitably come, we will still miss you and your iconic black turtleneck.

Apple had their annual WWDC at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco from June 6th through the 10th. There were over 5,200 attendees, over 120 sessions, and over 1,000 Apple engineers. Steve Jobs was there too and 3 main pieces of software were introduced: OS X Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud.

Here’s an in-depth look of what you might have missed:

Apple iCloud

The PC has been the digital hub for our digital life for over 10 years. We have been storing everything on our computers, including music, pictures, and documents, but when it comes to syncing all this to our portable devices, it can be quite a hassle. If you buy a song on your iPhone, its not there on your iPad and you would have to sync your iPhone and then your iPad just to get that song. Apple is trying to solve this problem with iCloud, a service that stores your content and wirelessly pushes it to all your devices.

Apple has gotten rid of MobileMe, instead, reworking Contacts, Calendars, and Mail from the ground up to support iCloud. iCloud also supports the App Store, iBooks, and Backup, syncing your purchase history and allowing you to redownload apps, resuming where you left off in a book, and allowing you to wirelessly back up to the cloud. In addition, documents, pictures, and music (iTunes) can also be stored in the cloud.

Apple is also offering an iTunes Match service. iTunes Match will scan and match all your ripped songs, upgrading matched songs to 256 kbps AAC DRM-free and uploading them to the cloud. This service will cost $25 per year.

Besides iTunes Match, everything else in iCloud will be absolutely free and include 5GB of free data for Mail, Documents, and Backup. iCloud is coming this fall. [via Apple]

Apple held a media event on Wednesday in San Francisco, and in addition to the announcement of the iPad 2, they also had plenty of other news:

  • iBooks, which launched less than a year ago, has reached 100 million book downloads.
  • Random House is bringing their books to the iBooks store.
  • Currently, there are 200 million iTunes accounts with credit cards and 1-click purchasing.
  • Developers have earned a total of over 2 billion dollars from the app store since its launch.
  • Recently, the 100 millionth iPhone was shipped.
  • 15 million iPads have been sold since 2010 and it has generated $9.5 billion in revenue in 2010.
  • There are currently 65,000 apps specifically designed for the iPad.

Augmented reality and optimal character recognition come together into one package, with Word Lens for the iPhone. Word Lens is an instant translation app that works with your iPhone’s camera; point at a sign and it will instantly be translated on screen.

The app is free, but language packs will cost you $4.99 each. We gave it a try, and although the app is not as perfect or accurate as the video, its still amazing to see what the future holds. [via iTunes]

As an added bonus, you can watch the “Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964” video free for the rest of the year.

It looks like Steve and Yoko have finally worked out an agreement, but couldn’t this have come a little bit earlier? [via Apple]
